Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
