No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
