Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
